Maroon Rides
I am on a team of 4 amazing developers working on Maroon Rides: a native mobile app for the Texas A&M University bus system. We recently released our v1.0 version and it has been a huge success! At the time of writing (Feb. 2, 2024) we have 1.5k downloads on the App Store. I have met multiple people while waiting for the bus that uses Maroon Rides. There is something about standing next to a person and looking over to see an app that you helped create running on their phone. I almost always introduce myself to them and ask what they think!
The app has 5 stars on the App Store at the time of writing and averages ~500 downloads a day. We are planning on some new features later this spring including route planning, an Apple Watch app, Widgets, and more!
The app was written in TypeScript on React Native. We use Expo to streamline the development process. We started as a project in Aggie Coding Club where we had to onboard 10 developers. Expo Go streamlines the process of getting a development environment to as simple as npm i
and then npm start
. It allows Windows users to run the app on their iPhones without a Mac. You don’t have to install Xcode or Android Studio to just run the app, simply scan a QR code with the Expo Go app and boom you’re done.
The project managers team comprises of me, Pavithra Gopalakrishnan, Sumit Nalavade, Shweta Kumaran, and Kayley Vu. Follow us on GitHub LinkedIn and Instagram.
